With a population of over 160 million people and rice as a staple food, Nigeria has become one of the world’s largest consumer of rice. Nigerians consume over 6 million metric tonnes of rice annually, making it the largest consumer of rice in Africa and the 11th largest in the world. Of the total rice consumed annually, only 2.8 million tonnes is produced locally. Nigeria’s annual importation of 3 million metric tonnes of rice accounts for 25% of all rice imports into sub-Saharan Africa—making the country the second largest importer of rice in the world, after China.
