Core issues include an estimated 70% failure rate of the Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) across most local governments of the State, inadequate physicians density of approximately 0.13 per 1,000 population, against the WHO recommendation of 1 doctor per 1,000 population.

Also, there’s a generalized absence of essential equipments and operational tools in 80% of all state-owned facilities outside Uyo metropolis, and of course a high reliance on Out-of-Pocket (OOP) spending which make up over 78% of total health expenditure. These conditions have led to very poor health indices in the State, like an estimated Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 512 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
